Following the interactive process, there can be a variety of outcomes or a combination of outcomes, described in more detail in the following sections.
Accept Accommodations
After the University has determined which reasonable accommodations will be provided, they will be communicated to the disabled individual. If they wish to accept the accommodation, they must communicate this back to the University.
Individuals are neither obligated, nor required, to accept an accommodation that has been offered by the University.
Those accommodations found to be reasonable and accepted by the individual will be implemented in concert and collaboration with the individual and any relevant units, stakeholders, or other entities. All participants in the interactive process are encouraged to document any accommodations put into place.
Decline Accommodations
Individuals are neither obligated, nor required, to accept an accommodation that has been offered by the University.
If the University offers a reasonable and effective accommodation and it is declined, the University may not be obligated to offer a different accommodation or an individual’s preferred accommodation.
If an individual declines accommodations, this does not prevent them from reengaging in the interactive process or requesting accommodations in the future.
Alternative Accommodations
While engaging in the interactive process, accommodations other than those explicitly requested by the disabled individual may be identified and offered. In this case, individuals may decline those alternatives; however, this does not necessarily mean the University will provide the individual’s preferred accommodation. Typically, individuals are encouraged to try any alternative accommodations offered. Should those alternatives be ineffective, individuals may reengage in the interactive process to revisit and modify the previous accommodation arrangement.
Ongoing Monitoring & Re-engagement
Individuals requesting accommodations are primarily responsible for communicating with the University regarding the ongoing effectiveness of any accommodations provided. Should circumstances change (such as the need for new/alternative accommodations arise), individuals may reengage in the interactive process at any time.
