Dear U-M Faculty and Staff,
As you begin this new academic year, the Disability Equity Office encourages you to Make It Accessible through many opportunities to support an accessible and inclusive environment for all at the University of Michigan.
Our office is the university’s centralized office for advancing accessibility and disability inclusion through education, training, outreach, and services for individuals with disabilities.
Our services include:
- Consultations and training on a variety of disability and accessibility topics.
- Workplace accommodations for faculty and staff.
- Accessible communication services through American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and financial support and coordination of external Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services for employees, job applicants, and events.
- Digital accessibility reviews of websites and applications.
Accessible event planning education and support.
You can help support U-M accessibility in the following ways:
Connect with Disability Navigators: Disability navigators are dedicated liaisons for specific schools, colleges, and units who provide referrals, resources, guidance, and training on a wide range of disability and accessibility topics.
Download Access U-M App: Use Access U-M to report physical and digital access barriers, such as inoperable power door openers, inaccessible websites or applications, and missing or illegible wayfinding signs, directly from your device. Download Access U-M from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Make It Accessible: Sign up for the upcoming 10-Week Accessibility Challenge, beginning September 21, or attend a training to learn how to create accessible documents, presentations, course materials, and more. You can also request financial support to add closed captioning to evergreen video materials, including lectures, symposia, and other educational event recordings.
Attend NDEAM: Join the month-long series of events celebrating disability inclusion across the university this October for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Events include a resource fair with more than fifteen campus and community partners, raffles, giveaways, drop-in digital accessibility checks, and a keynote address by Tiffany Yu, CEO & Founder of Diversability, a three-time TEDx speaker, and best-selling author.
Together, our small everyday actions can have a big impact toward fostering a disability-inclusive and accessible environment at the University of Michigan. For more ways to get involved, visit: disability.umich.edu.
