Required employee training on discrimination, harassment, and retaliation

May 12, 2026

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As an employee at the University of Michigan, you play an important role in helping to maintain an environment free of discrimination, harassment, and misconduct, where all members of our community feel welcome to learn, work, and grow.

University policies require all faculty and staff, including student employees, to report information involving sexual and gender-based misconduct and protected-class discrimination, harassment, or related retaliation to the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office within 48 hours of learning the information.

To best support faculty and staff in their reporting obligations, the university has developed a new required online training, SPG 201.89-1: Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation (available via a computer or tablet only). The training provides important information on the policy and procedures for addressing these types of concerns, as well as what to report and how to report.

The training will help you:

  • Identify discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
  • Identify available resources, including confidential resources.
  • Understand employee reporting obligations and how to report a concern.
  • Learn about resolution options and what happens after a report is made.

The module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You are required to complete the training by December 31, 2026.

Employee training related to the sexual and gender-based misconduct policy will be available later this year.

Please visit the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX website for frequently asked questions. Additional questions may be directed to the ECRT team at [email protected].

Thank you for your time and support in maintaining a safe and equitable environment for all.

Sincerely,

Rich Holcomb
