April 21, 2026
Dear colleagues,
On Friday, April 17, the U.S. Department of Justice extended the deadline by which all public universities must meet updated accessibility standards for digital content — such as websites, course materials, videos, documents, social media posts, and applications — under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Regulations that were previously scheduled to take effect on April 24, 2026, are now scheduled to take effect on April 26, 2027. Our teams are closely monitoring this and any future changes and will share updates on the Digital Accessibility website, specifically on our Guidance webpage.
While the compliance date has changed, our obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and other disability-related laws remain.
As shared in our April 14 message, our teams remain committed to providing guidance, resources, and support for the community. Together, we will maintain our momentum, building on our decades-long commitment to expanding the reach and impact of our research, teaching, service, and health care through a more inclusive, accessible University of Michigan.
If you have questions or would like additional support, please reach out to our teams for assistance with tools and services (ITS Digital Accessibility) or compliance (Disability Equity Office).
With gratitude,
Ravi Pendse
