Message to Students on Policies

Sept. 2, 2025

Dear U-M Student,

As you kick off the start of the academic year, I am writing to share important information about university policies, resources and reporting options that support a campus environment free of discrimination, harassment and misconduct.

Policy Updates

Following the June 2024 agreement with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the university committed to creating a new non-discrimination policy for students with accompanying updates to our existing non-discrimination policy for employees. These policies outline the university’s process for responding to concerns of discrimination or harassment based on a protected class, including race, religion and national origin.

In addition, the university updated its existing Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct policy to align procedures as closely as possible across the policies.

All policies include information about available resources and support, policy procedures, reporting obligations and resolution options.

Important update: Under the new policies, all non-confidential U-M employees, including student employees, are expected to share with the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office (ECRT) information they learn in their role as an employee about alleged sexual or gender-based misconduct and protected class discrimination, harassment or related retaliation. Learn more about reporting obligations and exemptions.

ECRT will host several community information sessions on the new and updated policies throughout September. Registration is required.

Resources

ECRT provides education, training and support to the U-M community as well as addresses concerns of harassment, discrimination and retaliation involving students, faculty and staff. Our office also serves as a resource for understanding university policies and procedures and can connect individuals to other campus resources, including confidential support services.

How to Report

Students are encouraged to share information with ECRT to ensure those impacted by misconduct, harassment and discrimination are offered information, support and resources.

You can share a concern with ECRT in any of the following ways:

  • Report a Concern form
  • Email [email protected]
  • Phone (734-763-0235)
  • In person between 8-5 pm, Mondays-Fridays at 2030 Administrative Services, 1009 Greene Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109.

Please visit the ECRT website for more information. Additional questions may be directed to the ECRT team at [email protected].

Thank you for your support in helping to maintain a safe and equitable environment for all.

Sincerely,

Tami Strickman

Executive Director and Special Advisor to the President
